SHAMOKIN DAM, Pa. – The Lehigh women’s rowing team put forth a strong effort on Saturday against Duquesne and Bucknell. In a pair of head-to-head duals, the Mountain Hawks’ Varsity Eight and Varsity Four each beat Duquesne while all boats were within striking distance in every race.

“I think today was a good day of racing for us from top to bottom,” said Lehigh head coach Brian Conley. “Obviously there are still things we can tighten up before Patriots, but the Varsity Eight had a great race and I think going into Patriots, that really helped us with what we have to do.”

The Varsity Eight began the day by finishing in 5:52.0, more than 15 seconds ahead of the Dukes (6:07.21). The V8 went on to finish less than five seconds behind Bucknell in his second race of the day (5:50.16, behind the Bison’s 5:45.86).

The Second Varsity Eight came in second in each race, but was extremely competitive and showed strong signs. The crew posted a time of 6:12.89 against Duquesne (compared to the Dukes’ 6:04.46). The Mountain Hawks finished in 6:10.95 in the afternoon (to Bucknell’s 6:00.04).

The Varsity Four picked up a win over Duquesne, finishing in 6:40.18 (to the Dukes’ 6:46.48). Lehigh then posted a time of 6:32.43 against the Bison, less than nine seconds off the pace (6:23.73).

“We saw some speed coming out of the Four, which we’re excited about,” said Conley. “That boat has struggled a little bit early on in the season and we’re excited to see how they’re picking up speed has the season has progressed.”

The Mountain Hawks will now look ahead to the Patriot League Championships on Friday, May 13 on the Cooper River in Cherry Hill, NJ

“The Patriot League as a whole has gotten faster than a league,” said Conley. “The Patriot League Championships are going to be really fun to watch and there’s going to be a lot of great, tight races.”
