A Lehigh Acres man has been sentenced to life in prison for the death of a man he shot 16 times.
Ricky Gaspar Ruiz, 26, was sentenced after a jury found him guilty on Jan. 21 of second-degree murder with a firearm and shooting at/into an occupied vehicle.
He was sentenced as a prison releasee reoffender, according to the State Attorney’s Office.
The shooting happened at Lehigh Acres in 2020.
“Ruiz, and co-defendant Victor Colon Jr., chased down people, through rush hour traffic, in a car chase,” a release from the State Attorney’s Office issued today states. “The cars then came to a stop and Ruiz got out of his vehicle and shot the victim 16 times. The defendants then fled and were captured in Hialeah by the US Marshals.”
The Lee County Sheriff’s Office led the investigation.
Colon, who was found guilty of second degree murder and shooting at/into an occupied vehicle, is scheduled to be sentenced on Feb. 14.
The jury returned its verdicts in less than an hour, according to the State Attorney’s Office.
Ruiz’ public defender has filed a motion for a new trial.
Homicide Unit Assistant State Attorney Sara Miller and Assistant State Attorney Andrew Riordan prosecuted the case.
