BETHLEHEM, PA. – The Navy rallied twice to break even, but the Lehigh women’s lacrosse team always had an answer. In the end, junior Nora Giordano scored 2:30 in extra time to give the Mountain Hawks a 13:12 win over the Midshipmen in the quarter-finals of the Patriot League on Monday afternoon. With the win, Lehigh moves on to the semi-finals against Army West Point, which is scheduled for Thursday at 7 p.m. in the Ridley Athletic Complex of Loyola University.
“Just a huge win to have the strength to hold on to,” said Lehigh head coach and Patriot League coach of the year 2021, Jill Redfern. “Navy did a really great run, we owe them to them. They stayed through the game but took great pride in our resilience.”
The Mountain Hawks took the lead 4-0 and 5-1 before the Mids scored four goals within 1:40 and scored five goals in the first half with 10:17. Lehigh responded, however, when doctoral student Sondra Dickey’s (her fourth in the game) and second Emma Eberhardt’s goals gave Lehigh a 7-5 advantage.
The Mountain Hawks held the lead well into the second half, increasing their lead to up to three (11-8 and 12-9). But Navy had an answer, scoring three goals in 3:34 to even draw 3:57 at 12.
Both teams had chances in the final minutes of regulation, but Navy goalkeeper Jo Torres made a couple of big saves, including one with 17 seconds left to force overtime.
Navy gained control of the draw to begin the additional session, but a turnover gave ownership to the Mountain Hawks. After a break, sophomore Gabby found Schneider Giordano, who got past Torres to send Lehigh to the semifinals.

“Excited to see Nora score a big goal in a really big game,” said Redfern. “We have such a team-first group of players. Everyone is just very excited.”
Named Patriot League Midfielder of the Year earlier in the day, Dickey was sensational with five goals, four ground balls and five generated turnovers. She switched to 108 career-related sales and broke the connection with Julianne D’Orazio for the previous career record of the program.
Eberhardt added four goals while Schneider scored two goals and four assists. Senior Cecily Redfern led Lehigh with four draw controls while Dickey had three.
The final shots were 28-23 in favor of the Mountain Hawks, while Lehigh had a 19-13 lead on the groundballs. Navy ended up with a 17-9 advantage on draw controls. Senior Samantha Sagi made six saves over Torres, who reached eight.
Monday marked Lehigh’s first postseason win over Navy in program history and the first time the Mountain Hawks have beaten the Midshipmen twice in a season.
Lehigh will return to action against the Army in the semi-finals on Thursday evening at 7 p.m. That follows Colgate against Loyola in the first semifinals of the day at 3 p.m. Both games can be seen live on ESPN +.
