CAMDEN, NJ – Driven by fourth place in Varsity Eight, the Lehigh rowing team finished sixth of seven teams in the Patriot League Championships on the Cooper River on Friday morning. The Mountain Hawks’ two Varsity Eight boats scored 26 points that day.

Both Lehigh Varsity Eight boats finished second in their morning heats, facing Navy and Colgate. The preliminary time of the Varsity Eight of 7: 05.398 was good for the second in the run and the third-best overall ranking of the seven boats. In the grand finale, Lehigh achieved a time of 6: 46.256 and was fourth, just under 12 seconds behind the winning Navy boat.

“Varsity Eight got into a pretty tough period in the heat where they lost some of their pre-race nervousness,” said Lehigh head coach Brian Conley. They came back to fight for the final. They stormed down the course and it was just great to watch. “

The second Varsity Eight achieved a time of 7: 35.226 in the morning and was second in its run and sixth in the overall standings. The second Varsity Eight of the Mountain Hawks drove to sixth place overall in the grand finale with a time of 7: 46.881.

“There have been ups and downs in both races,” said Conley. “The second Varsity Eight had a lot of heat, but between the inexperience we have in this boat and the difficult year we had all around, they just couldn’t put it together for the finals. The Varsity Eight had the opposite one day If your top boat performs, that says a lot about everyone else getting it to that level. “

Conley paid tribute to his team’s leadership for guiding the Mountain Hawks through this COVID-affected year.

“There wasn’t much confidence that we would make it to this event by the end of the year,” he said. “The fact that we did this says a lot about the people who made the decision and did their job. I’m really proud of the work they did and the finishes that they had. They have really done something on the water today. ” that they will hold onto for the rest of their lives.

“Give the leadership in our team a lot of credit. Without the leadership we had, we would not have achieved the results we achieved today.”

Lehigh finished two points behind Holy Cross in fifth and six behind Colgate in fourth. The Mountain Hawks didn’t get on a Varsity Four boat. Navy won their sixth consecutive Patriot League championship, scoring 54 points and winning the Varsity Eight, Second Varsity Eight and Varsity Four.
