Next month’s list of activities at the East County Regional Library features topics for all ages. The following activities are free to the public:

programs for adults

Mondays 7, 14, 21, 28 – 2 February at 6 p.m

Face the chess challenge and join the fun. Chess enthusiasts of all ages are welcome. Bring your own chess set or use one of ours. This program is offered by the Friends of the East County Regional Library.

• Book Review: “Freedom” by Kaitlyn Greenidge

Monday 7 February at 3:30 p.m

Raised as a freeborn black woman in Reconstruction-era Brooklyn, Libertie Sampson struggles against her mother’s medical aspirations as she becomes more drawn to a musical career that could interfere with her autonomy.

Get personalized help downloading e-books, movies, music and more from Overdrive and Hoopla, two of Lee County Library System’s largest online content providers. Bring your fully charged digital device to this hands-on help session. Note: Please bring any passwords you may need to download apps. Kindle users will also need an Amazon account and their password to access it.

• The magical world of John Russell

Thursday, February 10 at 1 p.m

John Russell began his interest in magic as a child with a magic kit and bi-weekly trips on his bicycle to his local library, where he deepened his knowledge of this ancient art form. Join us as he presents his unique blend of storytelling and magic that is funny, upbeat and amazing. Stay an extra half hour after the show to learn some simple magic tricks to use.

• East County Craft Club: pompom dogs

Saturday February 12 at 2 p.m

Create your own cute dog shaped ornament. This program is for people over the age of 18. Registration is required.

• The crooner starring Dave Deluca

Tuesday, February 22 at 1 p.m

A musical tribute to the romantic songs popularized by male crooners such as Engelbert Humperdinck, Tony Bennett, Elvis Presley, Bobby Darin, Julio Iglesias, Perry Como, Dean Martin, Mel Torme, Bing Crosby, Nat King Cole, Frank Sinatra and Louis Armstrong were made , Johnny Mathis and Al Martino.

• Toddler Stories

Tuesdays 1st, 8th, 15th and 22nd February at 10am

For 18-36 months and caregivers. Toddlers and caregivers move and groove during this interactive storytelling time. The number of participants is limited to 20 children. First come first serve.

• Familystories

Wednesdays 2, 9, 16, 23 February at 10:30am

For children up to 5 years and carers. Families with young children enjoy a variety of stories, songs, rhymes and movements. The number of participants is limited to 20 children. First come first serve.

• Preschool Stories

Thursdays 3, 10, 17, 24 February at 10am

For 3-5 years. Children participate in this program independently while parents and caregivers wait nearby. The number of participants is limited to 20 children. First come first serve.

• Children look up fines

Thursdays, February 3, 10, 17, 24 at 4-5 p.m

Saturday 19 February at 1-2pm

Kids and teens can earn $2 overdue fine credit for every 15 minutes they read in the designated space, for a total of $8 in one session. Please bring your library card with you.

• STEAM Storytime

Saturday 5 February at 1 p.m

Children in grades K-5 are invited to participate in a STEAM Storytime that includes a story and activity based on aspects of STEAM: Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math. This is a great opportunity for parents and children to learn and get creative together.

Saturday, February 12 at 11:30 a.m

Children in grades K-5 and their caregivers are invited to participate in a Valentine’s Day celebration filled with music, crafts and more fun.

• Library Teen Talk

Tuesdays 1, 8, 15, 22 February at 2 p.m

Grab your friends and join a weekly discussion on current events, everyday life, library resources, and more. Teens in high school are encouraged to post an answer to a weekly question while socializing and making new friends.

• Children look up fines

Thursdays, February 3, 10, 17, 24 at 4-5 p.m

Saturday 19 February at 1pm – 2pm

Wednesday February 9th

2 p.m. – High School

4:30 p.m. – Middle School

Play board games, video games, card games and more in the library. Middle and high school teenagers are invited to join us after school for fun, games and socializing with friends.

• Edgar Allen Poe anti-Valentine performance

Tuesday, February 15 at 2 p.m

Edgar Allen Poe is played by actor Duffy Hudson, who brings stories of historical characters to life in a unique and unforgettable way. This fantastic performance will give teenagers a whole new perspective on The Raven, The Tell-Tale Heart and more of Poe’s memorable poetry.

• Middle School Anti-Valentine’s Day Party

Tuesday, February 15 at 4:30 p.m

Roses are red and violets are blue, this invitation is just for you. Don’t bring a date to this soiree celebrating single life after Valentine’s Day. This program features crafts, games and snacks for middle school teens.
