Mountain Hawks Recognized by USILA for Academic Success
BETHLEHEM, Pennsylvania – The Lehigh men’s lacrosse team was recognized for academic achievement by USILA as graduate students Andrew Eichelberger and Conor Gaffney were named Scholar All-Americans, while the Mountain Hawks received the USILA Academic Team Award.
Eichelberger and Gaffney have become the fourth and fifth Mountain Hawks of the program, called Scholar-All-Americans, for the past two seasons (after Erik DiGirolamo, Ryan Klose and Andrew Pettit in 2020) and 14 and 15 since 2010. A Scholar All-American must be nominated by his coach and be a student with an academic rank in the final year and an accumulated grade point average of 3.0 (4.0 scale). He will have behaved in a way that has earned credit for himself, his institution, and college lacrosse both on and off the field. He must also be an All-American, a member of a North / South team, or an outstanding league or conference player.
Eichelberger, a 2021 Academic All-Patriot League winner, achieved a cumulative grade point average of 3.9 as a PhD student in technical entrepreneurship. As a student, Eichelberger was included in the Dean’s List (for one semester GPA over 3.6), in the academic honor list of the Patriot League and the Faculty Athletics Council Award (for one semester GPA over 3.2). Meanwhile, Gaffney was two-time Patriot League Scholar-Athlete of the Year and three-time member of the Academic All-Patriot League team. Gaffney earned a GPA of 4.0 in his Management Science and Engineering degree after finishing his bachelor’s career at 3.95 in a double degree in mechanical engineering and integrated business and engineering (finance). Gaffney is a three-time CoSIDA Academic All-American (will be named to the second team in 2020 as one of only four Division I lacrosse student athletes to be recognized as Academic All-Americans).
The USILA Academic Team Award is a new award given to teams who have completed the school year with a GPA above 3.0. The Mountain Hawks averaged 3.63 GPA in the fall and 3.35 GPA in the spring.
