Strong Final Round Lifts Mountain Hawks To Eighth At Wildcat Invitational

VILLANOVA, PA. – Five players shot 76 or better, a three shot improvement when the Lehigh men’s golf team shot a final 292 round at the Wildcat Invitational at Radnor Valley Country Club on Tuesday. The Mountain Hawks finished the race at 587 (295-292), finishing eighth out of 16 teams.

Sophomore David Hurly was Lehigh’s top finisher and finished sixth with three over par 143 (70-73). Hurly screwed two of his last three holes to finish his second round of 73.

Lehigh’s low round on Tuesday was shot by sophomore Sam Barton, who shot two over par 72 to finish 29th with 147 (75-72). Barton carded a birdie in the final round on Tuesday.

Senior Owen Quinn made two birdies on the back nine and shot 76 on Tuesday to finish 34th with 148 (72-76).

Lehigh’s two biggest improvements over Monday came from newbies Edmund Broderick and sophomore Joey Dotta. Broderick made a pair of birdies on the final lap of 73, improved five shots from Monday, and ended in a tie for 45th place at 151 (78-73). Dotta improved by seven strokes, shooting 74 with two birdies to finish 75th at 155 (81-74).

Freshman AJ Gilpin finished 93rd in his first college tournament, shooting 170 (86-84).

St. John’s withheld a late charge from Temple to defeat the Owls in one fell swoop for the team title. The red storm shot 573 (277-296) while the owls ended at 574 (293-281). Bucknell was third with 577.

Driver Nathan Bazant was the individual medalist in a under par 139 (70-69). He scored a one-stroke win over Temple’s Conor McGrath and Jack Simon of St. John’s.

Next up for the Mountain Hawks Lafayettes Abarta Coca-Cola Collegiate Invitational is Sunday and Monday at the Steel Club in Hellertown.
