BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Patriot League play has arrived for the Lehigh men’s soccer team as the Mountain Hawks host American Friday night in the league opener for both sides. Game time is set for 6 pm from the Ulrich Sports Complex.
Lehigh enters league play at 0-3-1. Last time out, the Mountain Hawks played 15 minutes at Penn State Monday night before a lengthy weather delay forced the contest to be postponed. It was announced on Wednesday that the match at Penn State has been rescheduled for Tuesday, Oct. 18 at 5 pm at Jeffrey Field in University Park, Pa.
In its last completed contest, Lehigh drew La Salle 2-2 in the Mountain Hawks’ home opener on Sept. 6. Senior Jack Sarkos scored both Lehigh goals and brings a veteran presence to a Lehigh lineup that featured seven first-year starters in the Monday night game at Penn State.
First-year goalkeeper Tommy Chyzowych started the La Salle and Penn State games in net and has made 12 saves in 225 minutes this season.
Lehigh was picked fifth in the Patriot League preseason poll after finishing fourth in last year’s regular season standings.
American enters league play at 2-1-2. The Eagles played a 1-1 draw at Longwood on Saturday and own wins over Old Dominion and George Mason.
Robert Matei and Zemi Rodriguez have both scored two goals this season for the Eagles. Mattias Cooper has two assists. Lorenzo Gordon started American’s first four games in goal while Dominic Dominguez earned the start last time out.
American was 6-2-1 last season within the league and reached the championship match, falling to Loyola. The Eagles won the Patriot League title in the spring 2021 campaign.
The all-time series favors American 16-9-5. The Eagles won the last two meetings by identical 2-0 scores, while Lehigh’s last win came by a 2-1 margin in its 2019 Patriot League championship campaign.
Friday’s game will be broadcast on ESPN+.
Following Friday’s game, Lehigh will host Delaware Tuesday at 6 pm before visiting Loyola for its second Patriot League matchday, Sept. 24 at 3 pm
