Fish & Richardson is pleased to announce the appointment of 17 attorneys as directors of the firm, effective January 1, 2022. The new directors include: Michael Ballanco (DC); Caleb Bates (Silicon Valley and Southern California); Vivian Cheng (New York); Crystal Culhane (Southern California); Patrick Darno (DC); Will Freeman (DC); Ken Hoover (Austin); James Huguenin-Love (Twin Cities); Karan Jhurani (Atlanta); Jun Li (Dallas); Peng Lin (Boston); John McCormick (Boston); Tim Rawson (Southern California); Ayan Roy-Chowdhury (DC); Jeremy Saks (New York); Lance Wyatt (Dallas); and won Yoon (DC).

Newly promoted school principals for 2022 are:

Michael Ballanco focuses his practice on all aspects of patent infringement matters at the litigation and appeal level. He received his JD, magna cum laude, from George Mason University School of Law in 2014 and his BS, cum laude, in computer science and business administration from Lehigh University in 2008.

Dr. Caleb Bates focuses on intellectual property law with a focus on patent prosecution, strategic advice and global patent portfolio management in the pharmaceutical and biotechnology sectors. He received his JD from Santa Clara University School of Law, his Ph.D. in Medicinal Chemistry from the University of Michigan in 2010 and his BS in Biochemistry and History from the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities in 2004.

Vivian Cheng focuses her practice on trademark and copyright litigation and also advises clients on a wide range of issues relating to trademarks, trade dress and copyright protection and enforcement, unfair competition and false advertising. She received her JD with honors from Emory University School of Law in 2014 and her BS in Biology and Society from Cornell University in 2011.

Dr. Crystal Culhane’s practice focuses on U.S. and foreign patent issuance, public opinion, due diligence, and client advising in the chemical, pharmaceutical, biotechnology, nanotechnology, oil and gas, food and beverage, and medical device sectors. In 2014 she received her JD cum laude from the California Western School of Law, her Ph.D. in Chemistry from Johns Hopkins University in 2008 and her BS in Chemistry from University of St. Thomas in 2001.

Patrick Darno focuses his practice on US and foreign patent issuance and advice in the technology areas of bioinformatics, mobile communications, e-commerce, database and computing. He had years of industrial property protection prior to entering his private practice, having previously worked as a patent examiner at the US Patent & Trademark Office. He received his JD from the Catholic University of America’s Columbus School of Law in 2012 and his BS in Computer Engineering from Pennsylvania State University in 2005.

Will Freeman focuses on patent litigation in US district courts and Section 337 investigations of the International Trade Commission, with a technical focus on medical device and imaging technology patents. He received his JD in 2014 from Vanderbilt University Law School and his BS with honors and honors from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 2011 with dual majors in business and political science.

Ken Hoover focuses his practice on U.S. and foreign patent grant and penalty litigation in software, business methods, speech recognition, networks, semiconductor technologies, wireless communications, medical devices, and heat transfer technologies. He received his JD in 2014 from the University of Virginia School of Law, his MS in Electrical Engineering in 2005 from the University of Pennsylvania, and his BS with honors from the United States Naval Academy in 2003.

Dr. James Huguenin-Love, whose technical knowledge spans areas ranging from semiconductor physics to quantum mechanics to information theory, has fought litigation involving standard essential patents and patents that include bed sheets, integrated circuit design, power controls, wafer polishing, video, machining and Screen scraping software. In 2014, he received his JD from New York University School of Law, his Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from the University of Nebraska in 2010 and BS degrees with Major Honors in Electrical Engineering and Major Honors in Computing from the University of Nebraska in 2005.

Karan Jhurani operates a multifaceted practice focusing on complex patent litigation and pre-trial diligence, patent prosecution and portfolio development, and patent litigation before the Patent Trial and Appeal Board. He supports customers in a variety of technologies, including search engine and analysis algorithms, digital image and video processing, cellular standards, audio and video decoding, sports and fitness products, and consumer electronics. He received his JD with honors from Emory University School of Law in 2014 and his BS with honors from Georgia Institute of Technology in 2009.

Jun Li, who had a successful career in the telecommunications industry prior to joining Fish, has a practice focused on the granting of patents and post-grant processes in areas such as software, telecommunications, database technologies, cryptology, internet and computer network security and applications as well as microelectronics. He received his JD from Southern Methodist University Dedman School of Law as a valedictorian in 2014, his MS in electrical engineering from the University of Texas at Dallas in 1997, and his BS with honors in electrical engineering from the University of Texas at Austin in 1995.

Dr. Peng (Paul) Lin focuses his practice on patent granting and advice, public opinion, due diligence studies, and patent portfolio development and management. He has extensive research experience and training in human genetics, molecular biology, biophysics, bioinformatics and biostatistics. In 2014 he received his JD cum laude from Harvard Law School, his Ph.D. in Human and Statistical Genetics from Washington University in St. Louis in 2011 and his BS with Honors in Life Sciences from Tsinghua University in 2006.

John McCormick works closely with companies in the creation, protection and enforcement of trademarks in the US and internationally. He received his JD cum laude from the University of New Hampshire Franklin Pierce School of Law in 2014 and his BA, magna cum laude, in history from St. Michael’s College in 2011.

Tim Rawson has a practice that includes all aspects of intellectual property litigation and advice, with an emphasis on patent litigation. He received his JD from Pepperdine University School of Law in 2014 and his BS in Mechanical Engineering cum laude from Texas Tech University in 2004.

Dr. Ayan Roy-Chowdhury’s practice focuses on patent granting and advice, public opinion, due diligence studies, patent portfolio development and management, and post-grant proceedings before the USPTO Patent Trial and Appeal Board. He supports customers in a variety of technologies, including in the areas of electrical engineering and computer science, computer science and software, mechanical engineering and medical technology. Lance Wyatt’s practice is focused on patent litigation and has expertise in an unusually wide range of disciplines including life sciences, pharmaceuticals and biotechnology, software and computing, and oil and natural gas. He received his JD, magna cum laude, from Southern Methodist University Dedman School of Law in 2014 and his BS, magna cum laude, in Biomedical Engineering from Texas A&M University in 2011.

Won Yoon is dedicated to assisting clients with patent granting, post-grant procedures, due diligence, infringement and invalidity reports and freedom-to-operate analyzes.
