LUBBOCK, Texas — Lehigh sophomore Tyler Young was named Brooks Wallace Player of the Week by the College Baseball Foundation, in partnership with the National College Baseball Hall of Fame, given to the nation’s best shortstop.

The Brooks Wallace Award is presented annually to honor the nation’s most outstanding shortstop. It is a tribute to Brooks Wallace, a slick-fielding shortstop at Texas Tech from 1977-80 who passed away at age 27 after a courageous battle with leukemia. Prior to 2009, the award recognized the national player of the year.

Young was excellent during the Mountain Hawks’ 6-0 week with victories over Fairleigh Dickinson, Saint Peter’s and St Bonaventure.

He batted .500 (10-for-20) with four doubles, four RBIs and 10 runs scored, totaling 14 bases. He slugged .700 and reached base at a .560 clip. In the field, Young had a fielding percentage of .933 with six putouts and 22 assists.

On the season, Young is batting .323 with four doubles, 18 runs scored and 10 RBIs, walking a team-high tying 12 times.

Young and the Mountain Hawks head to Penn Wednesday at 2 pm to take on the Quakers at Meiklejohn Stadium. The game will be streamed live on ESPN+ (subscription required).
