Men’s Tennis opens season with a strong 7-0 win at Loyola
BALTIMORE, Md. – The Lehigh men’s tennis team opened their 2021 season with a bang, a 7-0 win over the Loyola (Md.) Greyhounds. Today’s win marks the third year in a row that the Mountain Hawks have started the season with a win.
At the end of the day, the Mountain Hawks won all nine games of the day. In first place, leader Zack Elliott showed maturity and dominance and beat his opponent in straight sets 6-2, 6-1.
Through the No. 2-4 matches, Lehigh won all three setters. In second place, Senior Harry Wang took the first set, dropped the second and then prevailed in the third set. The captain won, 7-5, 5-7, 6-1. Matt Kleiman and Jacob Edelchik both showed adversity this afternoon as both men lost the first set and recovered by winning the next two to take the win. Kleiman won 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 while Edelchik won 4-6, 7-6, 6-4.
In fifth and sixth, Jeremy Learner and Jordan Paul both won in straight sets. Learner won 6-2, 6-2 while Paul took his first college win 6-6, 7-5.
In doubles, Lehigh won the colon by winning all three games with a 6-4 score. Elliot and Wang were the top team for Lehigh, Edelchik and Fishkin were team # 2, and Learner and Steven Nazaroff were team # 3.
Next, Lehigh has scheduled a home competition against the Villanova Wildcats for next Saturday. The Mountain Hawks and Wildcats compete at 1:00 p.m. at the Lewis Indoor Tennis Center
