Berry Richards Obituary (2021) – Bethlehem, PA

Berry G. Richards, 90 from Bethlehem, died peacefully at home on July 15, 2021 after a brief illness. The daughter of the late Steven and Athena Gargal, Berry received an AB from Vassar College and an MS from SUNY Albany. As the first female library director at Lehigh University, Berry introduced innovative technologies and services; created the special collections department and planned the construction of the Fairchild-Martindale Library and the Bayer Galleria of Rare Books. She has served as a board member for many library, educational, and civic organizations. She received the Hillman Faculty of Lehigh University and the Paul Frantz Administration Award, the SUNY Albany Distinguished Alumna Award, and was a published author in library studies.

Survived by her sister Artemis Kirk and her loving family. Memorial service on Thursday, July 22, 2021 at 11 a.m. in the Greek Orthodox Cathedral of St. Nicholas 1607 West Union Blvd. Bethlehem, PA 18018, and livestream at www.stnicholas.org/richards
