Leary bolsters roster with 13 newcomers ahead of 2022 season
BETHLEHEM, Pennsylvania – The 2021 edition of the Lehigh Baseball program went down in history, taking its first Patriot League regular season title since 2006, after a fabulous year inducted into the Patriot League Championship Series for the first time since 2015.
Head Coach Sean Leary and Associate Head Coach and Recruiting Coordinator AJ Miller have officially launched the new freshman class, bringing their talent to J. David Walker Field from the 2022 season.
The Mountain Hawks are one of the largest recruiting classes in recent history, having 13 freshmen with a wide variety of skills across the United States as the 2022 campaign begins.
The class of 2025 has student-athletes from Illinois, Massachusetts, Minnesota, New York, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey coming to Lehigh.
Lehigh is one win away from winning the Patriot League Championship in 2021 and appears to be in good shape to battle for the program’s third league title in 2022.
Greg Becil – OF – New York, NY – Poly Prep
Born in the Big Apple, Becil came to Lehigh from Poly Prep Country Day School, where he excelled as a three-year college outfielder who was a senior team captain. Becil helped his teammates maintain a # 1 rankings in the state for three consecutive seasons (2019, 2020, 2021), including finishing 50th in the country in 2020. According to Perfect Game, Becil is # 73 overall player in the New York State and eleventh best outfielder.
Justin Butler – C – Quakertown, Pennsylvania – Quakertown
Butler is sure to add tremendous depth to a talented catch core in Lehigh who comes to South Mountain from nearby Quakertown. He received the Quakertown High School Outstanding Athlete Award last season and was a second Team All-League selection in 2019 and 2021. According to Perfect Game, Butler ranks 30th. He was one of the top 500 players selected by the country’s publication.
Marcus Danchision – RHP – Ringtown, Pennsylvania – MMI Preparatory School
Danchision, a talented right-hander from Ringtown, Pennsylvania, holds MMI Prep’s single-season strikeout record of 120 through the 2021 season. He helped lead the team to their first PIAA playoff win in school history. In the classroom, Danchision is a member of the National Honors Society and the Science National Honors Society. He was a quarterly member of MMI Prep’s President’s List for all four years.
Najir Glenn – LHP / 1B – Harrisburg, Pennsylvania – Harrisburg SciTech
Glenn is a two-way gamer and the newest southpaw to bring his expertise to the Lehigh program. Hailing from the state capital Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, a product of Harrisburg High School, SciTech Campus. He was his team captain and First Team All-Conference in his senior season. Glenn was the president of his student council and finished the top 50 in his class.
Gunnar Goodwin – RHP – Orono, Minnesota – Orono
Goodwin is an excellent player from Orono, Minnesota. In the past season alone, he was a member of the Minnesota State All-Conference Team and winner of the Academic All-State Award from the Minnesota State High School Baseball Coaches Association (MSHSBCA). As a three-year pitcher at Orono, Goodwin also had an outstanding academic career, graduating with honors and receiving the presidential award.
Jack Hamilton – RHP – Doylestown, Pennsylvania – Central Bucks East
Hamilton is Central Bucks East’s newest product, bringing its talents to Lehigh and adding depth to the hill for the next four seasons. He was named a Preseason All-American by Rawlings Perfect Game last year and was named one of the top eight pitchers in the state of Pennsylvania by PA Preps Rivals. Hamilton was a member of the Perfect Game National Team for the WWBA World Championships. In addition to baseball, he was a two-time MVP at Quakertown in basketball and also received an award for the First Team All-Conference. Hamilton has been on his high school honor roll at every stage of his academic career.
Sam Holtz – IF – Lake Zurich, Ill. – Lake Zurich
After graduation and MLB draft selection of Lake Zurich product Matt Svanson, Holtz becomes the newest Zurich seaman to come to Lehigh. An excellent infielder, he was a starter and team captain for three years in his last two seasons. In 2021, Holtz reached .357 with three home runs and led LZ to its first regional championship in over 10 years. He was an NSC All-Conference Selection and received NSC All-Academic Awards. In the classroom, Holtz is a member of the National Honors Society.
Timmy Kenney – RHP – Hopedale, Massachusetts – Loomis Chaffee
Despite injuries in his last two seasons at Loomis Chaffee, Kenney decided to do a build-up year in 2021 and became a relief pitcher / closer. After switching from starter / outfielder in his first and second seasons, he helped lead his team to a 10-3 record and was one of the best prep teams in New England.
Andrew Kohl – OF – Doylestown, Pennsylvania – Central Bucks West
Kohl is Lehigh’s second native doylestown in the class of 2025 and is having a strong senior season for Central Bucks West. An outfielder by profession, he beat .320 with four homers as captain in his senior season, earning First Team All-SOL and First Team All-County awards. In the classroom, Kohl is a four-year-old Honor Roll member while taking four AP classes.
Brett Palmer – RHP – Mars, Pennsylvania – Central Catholic
Palmer, a right-handed pitcher from Mars, Pennsylvania, had a tough senior season that ended with a Perfect Game All-American Honorable Mention nod for the northeastern region. He was a preseason All-WPIAL Second Team selection and was Tribune Review’s 2021 Player to Watch. According to the PBR, Palmer ranks 63rd overall in the state of Pennsylvania and is the 27th right-handed in his class.
Rafe Perich – IF – New Tripoli, Pennsylvania – Northwest Lehigh
Perich brings pop and potential to an already stacked Lehigh lineup in 2022 after a fantastic career at Northwestern Lehigh. Just the second switch hitter on the line-up alongside Gerard Sweeney, Perich was a first team all-area pick for three consecutive years (2019-21). Perich helped move Northwestern Lehigh to a second place in the district in 2019, 2020 and 2021 while winning the league in his senior season. According to Perfect Game, Perich ranks 37th overall in Pennsylvania, including fourth place among the shortstops. His father Josh is a former assistant coach at Lehigh and was a 1998 New York Mets draft pick in the 11th round.
Val Taddei – RHP – South Riding, Virginia – Freedom
A product of Freedom High School in South Riding, Virginia, Taddei is a talented right-handed pitcher with an ERA under 2.00 in 2021 who helped lead his high school to a district championship and an unbeaten regular season. In the classroom, he earned a GPA of 4.37 and was a member of the Latin, Math and Science Honors Society.
Jake Whitlinger – IF – Harleysville, Pennsylvania – La Salle College
Whitlinger is one of Pennsylvania’s top infielder heading into the upcoming season, as evidenced by his awards and accomplishments at La Salle College High School. A native of Harleysville, Pennsylvania, was a three-year starting shortstop for the team, winning two Catholic League titles and a state championship in 2021. In his senior season, he received the First Team All-Catholic honor after hitting .371 with 35 stolen bases. Whitlinger is a two-time Power Showcase All-American, two-time Perfect Game Preseason All-American (Mid-Atlantic Region) and was Courier Times Pennsylvania All-Stat in 2021. According to Perfect Game, he is a top 500 player in the nation and the seventh best shortstop in Pennsylvania.
