A local motorcycle run and brunch that ends on Captiva registers bikers and passengers.

The ninth annual David Barbur Biker’s Brunch is organized by Abuse Counseling and Treatment and begins August 15th at 9:30 am at Stu’s Motorcycles in Fort Myers, with registration starting at 8:30 am in the islands and ending at the Keylime Bistro.

In the island restaurant, the event participants enjoy a buffet-style brunch.

“David Barbur, when he was still alive, he started doing it” Megan Dalabes, director of community education and development at ACT, said of the fundraiser. “To raise awareness and support for domestic violence survivors and their children.”

Barbur, a former ACT board member, died of a brain tumor in 2013.

“The event will continue after his death” She said. “His whole family is coming out.”

“It really is an incredible community-based event” Dalabes added.

Proceeds will support safe, free, and confidential programs for domestic violence victims and their children, and survivors of sexual assault and human trafficking in Lee, Hendry, and Glades counties.

“Because the sponsors cover everything – all of the proceeds go to ACT.” She said.

Dalabes highlighted some of the services the organization provides for those in need, including a 24-7 helpline, three safe shelters, children’s programs, legal support and advice.

Like several fundraisers, the event was canceled last year due to the pandemic.

“Due to the pandemic, the need for our services has increased enormously” She said. “Unfortunately, less money came in over the course of the year.”

In 2019, event attendance was at its peak and $ 5,000 was raised for ACT.

“That’s why we’re hoping for $ 5,000 again this year” Dalabes said, adding that whatever the revenue, the event was a great opportunity to raise awareness about the organization and the services it offers.

“This year there is an upper limit of 85 registrants” She said.

The cost is $ 25 per biker or $ 20 per passenger.

In addition to brunch, there is coffee and donuts in the morning.

“Stu offers”, said Dalabes. “You are wonderful.”

The spread put together by Keylime Bistro also includes the famous Key Lime Pie.

“It’s a delicious full buffet with great offerings for a variety of different people.” She said. “You have your healthier eaters and you have your heartier eaters.”

Participants will also have the opportunity to win raffle prizes, including gift cards for local businesses.

The public is invited to register and take part.

“This is a special way to come together, have fun, enjoy good food and support survivors of violence and abuse and their children in our community.” said Dalabes.
