PHILADELPHIA – The Lehigh women’s rowing team opened its spring season on Saturday with mixed results against Saint Joseph’s and Delaware on the Schuylkill River in Philadelphia. The Varsity Eight led the way with a second-place finish.
The V8 finished with a time of 7:32.8 – behind Delaware in first (7:24.3) and ahead of Saint Joseph’s in third (7:33.9).
“Really excited about the speed the Varsity Eight showed today,” said Lehigh head coach Brian Conley. “I think they showed a great amount of poise and a lot of skill in terms of handling some really tough conditions. The conditions deteriorated as the racing went on, but I think at the end of the day, the Varsity Eight had the best race they possibly could have in that scenario.”
There were three other events on Saturday, with the Mountain Hawks’ Second Varsity Eight and Varsity Four finishing third (with times of 7:56.9 and 9:22.5), and the Third Varsity Eight (which was a combination of Lehigh’s Varsity Four and Second Varsity Eight) placing fourth (8:38.5).
“Definitely have some work to do in the 2V and the Varsity Four, which is finding some consistency of attacking,” said Conley. “If they can attack the race more consistently, they’ll find a good amount of speed later in the season.”
The Mountain Hawks will return to action next Saturday (Mar. 26) against Mercyhurst on the Susquehanna River in Shamokin Dam, Pa. The Lehigh men also open their season, facing Bucknell, Mercyhurst and Michigan.
“I’m excited about where we’re starting, but at the same point, we have a lot of work to do,” said Conley. “If we put it all together, by the end of the season, we’ll be in a great spot for the championships.”
