Mix of everything leads Lehigh to doubleheader sweep of The Mount

COLONIAL HEIGHTS, Va. — Saturday afternoon had a little bit of everything: hitting, pitching and two victories, as the Lehigh baseball team swept the doubleheader over Mount St. Mary’s at Shepherd Stadium. The Mountain Hawks (3-2) one-hit the Mountaineers in the first game, 4-1 and followed it up with a powerful 15-9 victory in the second game.

Senior left-hander Luke Rettig threw another gem in his second start of the season in the first game, tossing five innings of one-hit ball with just one run given up, none earned with 10 strikeouts. He also walked five batters. In the second game, the Mountain Hawks were led by a dynamite offensive effort from junior catcher Adam Retzbach, who went 3-for-5 with a home run, a triple, four RBIs and three runs scored. Senior first baseman Casey Rother went 4-for-6 with an RBI in the victory.

In Game 1, Mount St. Mary’s tackled on the game’s first run in the top of the third inning when they stole both second and home to take a 1-0 lead. In the bottom of the frame, Lehigh scored three times, led off by a Rother RBI double that scored Tyler Young and later a two-run double from Retzbach that scored both Rother and Jake Whitlinger as Lehigh took a 3-1 lead.

Fast forward to the fifth inning, Casey Rother flied out to right field on a sacrifice, which brought in Whitlinger to give the Mountain Hawks a 4-1 advantage.

Sophomore right-hander Tyler Thompson pitched the final two innings of the contest, shutting out the mount with no hits and three strikeouts to earn his first career save.

Six different Mountain Hawks tallied one hit in the win, while Rother and Retzbach drove in a pair of runs each to total the four scored by Lehigh.

Senior lefty Matt Stamford made the start for Lehigh in Game 2 and Mount St. Mary’s started the scoring early in the top of the first with a two-run home run for Thomas Bramley, giving the Mountaineers an early 2-0 lead.

Lehigh tied the game up in the second inning thanks to an RBI double from Riley Davis which scored Andrew Nole and an RBI single from Young to make it a 2-2 ballgame. In the bottom of the third, Retzbach homered and scored Rother to take a 4-2 lead. Mount St. Mary’s got a run back in the top of the fourth inning, but a two-run single from Retzbach in the bottom of the inning made it 6-3 and an error that scored Retzbach made it 7-3.

In the bottom of the fifth, it was Andrew Kohl who hit a towering home run to left center field to give Lehigh an 8-3 advantage and then Rother followed that up with an RBI single to increase the lead to 9-3.

The Mountain Hawks scored five unanswered runs between the sixth and seventh innings, which included an RBI single from Young and a two-run single from Rafe Perich as Lehigh took a commanding 15-4 lead.

Mount St. Mary’s attempted to come back in the top of the ninth inning with four unanswered runs, but junior Ryan Deom shut the door in the ninth to escape with the 15-9 victory.

Stamford earned his first win of the season after going 5.2 innings, allowing three earned runs on three hits with eight strikeouts and a walk. In addition to big performances from Retzbach and Rother, Young went 3-for-4 with three RBIs and two runs scored, while Davis was 2-for-4 with three runs scored and a double.

Lehigh closes the series on Sunday with another doubleheader vs Mount St Mary’s with first pitch set for noon from Shepherd Stadium.
