History

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Trailing 3-1 going to the bottom of the sixth in game two, the Lehigh softball team rallied with two runs to pull even at 3-3. The Mountain Hawks failed to take the lead in the sixth and stranded two runners in the seventh, to settle for a 3-3 tie with Princeton in the second game of a doubleheader Wednesday at Leadership Park. The game was halted on account of impending darkness after seven innings.

The visiting Tigers, coached by Lehigh Hall of Famer Lisa (Sweeney) Van Ackeren ’09, took the first game of Wednesday’s non-league twin bill 3-0. Both teams stood at 16-13-1 on the season. For the Mountain Hawks, the tie was their first since a 2-2 tie against Villanova in the second game of a doubleheader in 2018.

Junior Emily Cimino had three hits in Wednesday’s doubleheader and senior Addie Kittel drove in two of Lehigh’s three runs in the nightcap.

Game one saw Princeton score single runs in the second, fifth and seventh innings, while Ali Blanchard and Meghan Harrington combined to hold Lehigh to just three hits.

Lauren Sablone had two of Princeton’s eight hits, including an RBI single in the second inning. Serena Starks drove in the other two Tiger runs on a fifth inning single and seventh inning double.

Cimino, Kittel and senior Carley Barjaktarovich had Lehigh’s hits in game one.

Senior Gabriella Nori started in the circle and took the loss, allowing two runs on six hits in five innings with four strikeouts. First-year Maria Urban pitched the final two innings, allowing one run on two hits with two strikeouts.

The Mountain Hawks struck first in game two with a run in the fourth inning. Cimino led off with a single but was thrown out at the plate when O’Rourke blooped a three-base hit down the right field line. With two outs, O’Rourke came home from third when Kittel reached on a throwing error to give Lehigh a 1-0 lead.

Princeton answered immediately with three runs in the top of the fifth on an Adrienne Chang RBI single, a Sophia Marsalo ground out and a hit batter with the bases loaded.

O’Rourke reached on an error to open the sixth and moved to second on a single by Cannon. Kittel laced a single to center, plating O’Rourke to bring Lehigh within 3-2 as Cannon moved to third. With senior Melissa Fedorka pinch hitting with one out, Tiger catcher Ashley McDonald tried to throw behind Cannon, but with nobody covering third base, the ball got loose. Pinch runner Lindsey Martin took off for second base and on the throw there, Cannon raced home with the tying run.

Lehigh was unable to take the lead in the sixth. After sophomore Katelyn Young pitched a 1-2-3 top of the seventh, Cimino got to second as the winning run with one out in the bottom of the frame, but the Mountain Hawks could not drive her in as Alexis Laudenslager struck out Cannon and Kittel to end the threat and end the game in a tie.

Young allowed three runs on six hits in a complete game effort with three walks and five strikeouts.

Cimino and O’Rourke both had two hits to lead Lehigh in game two.

The Mountain Hawks will close out their 11-game homestand on Sunday when they host Rider in a non-league doubleheader, with first pitch for game one set for noon.
