Lehigh Claims Patriot League Win at Holy Cross

WORCESTER, Mass. – After dropping the first set (18-25) to Holy Cross, the Lehigh volleyball team won the next three sets (25-19, 29-27, 25-15) to earn a 3-1 win over the Crusaders. The Mountain Hawks are now 13-12 on the year and 4-9 in the Patriot League while the Crusaders fall to 3-21 overall and 1-12 in league action.

Both teams opened the match with a couple of points before Holy Cross recorded six straight points to take a 7-2 lead. Lehigh called a timeout and forced a service error, which led to earning three points of his own to make the set at 7-5. The Crusaders doubled up the Mountain Hawks, 18-9, but Lehigh was able to cut the deficit to four points, 22-18. Holy Cross would tally the next three points and claimed set one.

Set two was closely contested as both squads were tied at 6-6 when Lehigh scored four consecutive points to take a 10-6 edge. Holy Cross earned four of the next five points to put the score at 11-10 and the Mountain Hawks pulled further ahead to take an 15-11 lead. Lehigh extended their advantage to 18-12 before the Crusaders got within four points, 20-16. Lehigh held on to the lead and earn the set two victory by a score of 25-19 and evened the match.

The Mountain Hawks were ahead a 4-1 and both teams were even at 8-8 and exchanged points until Holy Cross and Lehigh were still knotted up at 16-16. The Crusaders took a four-point advantage, 23-19, but Lehigh would not fall behind any further and would continue to go point-for-point with Holy Cross and need extra points to find a winner. Lehigh scored three consecutive points to earn a set three win, 29-27, and take a 2-1 advantage in match.

Lehigh opened a set of four with a 4-0 advantage before Holy Cross scored their first points of the set. The Mountain Hawks were ahead by 7-6 and pushed that advantage to 18-11, as the Crusaders came within six points, 21-15. Lehigh tallied the next four points to claim the set, 25-15, and the match, 3-1.

Leading the Mountain Hawks in kills was junior Katarina Kaburov, who finished with 11 kills, 11 digs, two service aces and two blocks while first-year Natalie Luscomb finished the match with nine kills, three blocks and three digs. Sophomore Emily Stewart contributed eight kills and had a team-high hitting percentage of .353 and led the team with five blocks and first-year Madison McCartney added seven kills, with a hitting percentage of .313, to go with four blocks, three digs and a service ace.

Sophomore Makena Smith led the Mountain Hawks with 37 assists and added 10 digs, three kills, two blocks and one service ace. Sophomore Kyleigh Brown led the squad with 13 digs while adding three assists.

Lehigh returns to Bethlehem next weekend to host their final home matches of the season. The Mountain Hawks take on Navy on Friday, Nov. 4 at 7 pm, then American on Saturday, Nov. 5 at 4 pm Both matches will be broadcast on ESPN+.
