Lehigh, Coastal Carolina Meet in Baltimore Friday

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh women’s lacrosse team will finish off a busy four game in 10 day stretch on Friday when the Mountain Hawks face Coastal Carolina at 10:30 am in Baltimore. The neutral site game will be played at Johns Hopkins. The game was originally slated to be played at USA Lacrosse Headquarters, but got moved to Homewood Field this week. It will be a homecoming for associate head coach Sammy Cermack, who was an All-American midfielder for the Blue Jays.

The Mountain Hawks are coming off a strong 16-11 win over Siena on Tuesday, which saw Lehigh explode for all 16 of its goals before the game was 50 minutes old. Junior Emma Eberhardt led the way with five goals while classmate Gabby Schneider had four goals and three assists. The two connected (Schneider to Eberhardt) for a second-quarter goal that gave Lehigh a 6-5 lead and was featured as the No. 4 Play of the Day on ESPN’s SportsCenter. It was Eberhardt’s second #SCTop10 play of the season (the other being from the season opener at Saint Joseph’s).

Sophomore Hayley Hunt finished with nine saves, allowing nine goals as she’s had at least a 50 percent save percentage in all five games this season. After Tuesday’s win, she stands second nationally in save per game (13.60) and third in save percentage (58.1). As a team, the Mountain Hawks are up to 15th in the country in caused turnovers per game (10.20).

On Tuesday, senior Nora Giordano tied a career high with four points (two goals, two assists) while sophomore Olivia Memeger scored three goals for her third-career hat trick (all coming this season). Junior Julia Skillin scored a big goal in the final seconds of the first half, while causing two turnovers. Classmate Cassie Marte caused two turnovers as well.

Friday will mark the first-ever meeting between Lehigh and Coastal Carolina, who is a member of the Atlantic Sun. The Mountain Hawks have played some teams from the conference recently, including Liberty to open 2019 and Jacksonville in 2015. Lehigh has a win over a current member of the Atlantic Sun, beating Liberty on the road in 2016, 16-5.

Like Lehigh, Coastal Carolina stands 2-3 on the season, most recently falling at VCU on Wednesday, 11-7. Prior to that, the Chanticleers won at Radford (15-5) and Elon (15-14 in overtime), sandwiched between losses at Davidson (13-8) and No. 17 Richmond (12-4). Hannah Demis leads the team in points with 12 via four goals and a team-high eight assists. Both Lauren Cremen and Avery McIlwaine have scored seven goals to lead Coastal Carolina. Avery Snyder’s 13 draw controls are tops on the team while Marissa Munson is No. 1 in caused turnovers (7). Claire Martell has started all five games in goal, tallying a 10.86 goals against average and 42.9 save percentage. In the Atlantic Sun preseason poll, Coastal was picked third (behind Jacksonville and Liberty), with Dennis and Avery Whitehead earning preseason All-Conference honors.

Friday will be the first-ever meeting between Lehigh and Coastal Carolina.

Following Friday’s game, the Mountain Hawks return home next Saturday (Mar. 19) to host Loyola at 1 pm in their Patriot League opener.
