The New York City Real Estate Heir Who Died At 78

Robert Durst Net Worth

His death on January 10, 2022, was confirmed by an autopsy to be that of Robert Alan Durst (April 12, 1943–January 10, 2022). Son of Seymour Durst, a prominent New York real estate developer, he was a suspect in the 1982 disappearance of his first wife, Kathleen McCormack, the 2000 shooting of long-time acquaintance Susan Berman, and the 2001 killing of his neighbor, Morris Black . Convicted for bail jumping and evidence tampering (for dismembering Black’s body) in 2003, but cleared of murder, Durst faced little further legal action until his participation in the 2015 documentary miniseries The Jinx led to his being charged with Berman’s murder. In the year 2021, Durst was found guilty of the murder and sentenced to an eternity in jail without the possibility of release. He was arrested for the disappearance of McCormack not long after his sentencing, but his trial was never held since he died in 2022.

early life :

Robert Durst grew up in Scarsdale, New York, the eldest of four children. He was Seymour Durst’s and Bernice Herstein’s son. Douglas, Tommy, and Wendy Durst Joseph Durst, Durst’s paternal grandfather, arrived from Austria-Hungary in 1902 as a tailor and founded the Durst Organization in 1927.

Robert’s mother jumped from the family’s Scarsdale home’s roof when he was seven, and he subsequently said his father led him to a window where he could see her standing on the roof. But in a March 2015 New York Times interview, Douglas denied Robert had seen her die. When Robert was eight, a physician said he had “personality dissolution and probably even schizophrenia.”

Thirst was a loner at Scarsdale High School. At Lehigh University, he majored in economics and served as a business manager for the student newspaper, The Brown and White. Durst enrolled in a doctoral program at UCLA later that year, where he met Susan Berman, but dropped out and returned to New York in 1969.

Durst chose to create a tiny health-food store, All Good Things, in Vermont in the early 1970s, rather than work for his father at the Durst Organization. Durst closed All Good Things in 1973, persuaded by his father to rejoin the Durst Organization. Due to Robert Durst’s irresponsible behavior, Seymour Durst broke convention and named Douglas Durst as President of the Durst Organization in 1993. Robert Durst suspected and blamed his brother Douglas for stealing what he believed he was owed, causing a split between Robert and the Durst family . In 2006, Robert was bought out of the family trust for $65,000,000.

Kathleen McCormack, a dental hygienist, introduced Durst to her in 1971. Both were living together in Durst’s Vermont house and in Manhattan by the following year. They tied the knot in 1973, in the month of April. When McCormack vanished abruptly in early 1982, it was almost a decade later. A battle broke out between Durst and McCormack, who both claimed that the other had forced McCormack into the commuter train before he returned to his apartment and passed out. Friends of Gilberte Najamy, McCormack’s purported meet-up partner at the pub, were alarmed when she failed to show up. Durst filed a missing person’s report later in the week. In the garbage compactor of their flat three weeks later, the superintendent recovered McCormack’s belonging. McCormack had requested a $250,000 divorce settlement from Durst prior to her disappearance; instead, Durst canceled her credit card, erased her name from their joint bank account, and refused to pay for her medical school tuition. Face bruising inflicted by her husband had also taken McCormack to the hospital.

Durst divorced his wife of eight years, claiming spousal abandonment, after she went missing. Later, McCormack’s mother attempted to sue Durst for the death of their daughter and denying them the opportunity to bury it. In May of 2021, the case was categorized as a murder after a revived criminal investigation and further lawsuits. Durst was formally charged with her murder in October.

Murder of Susan Berman and Life Sentence

Susan Berman, a close friend of Durst’s, was found slain in her Los Angeles home on Christmas Eve of 2000. Berman had previously aided in the creation of Durst’s public alibi in the case of his wife’s disappearance. A few days prior to Berman’s death, Durst was in California, and he returned to New York the night before his body was discovered, according to public records. According to Cathy Scott, a writer who has investigated the disappearance of McCormack, Durst killed Berman because she had too much information. In March of this year, FBI investigators apprehended Durst. Durst was finally convicted of first-degree murder in September 2021 after multiple delays, retrials, and hospitalizations due to Durst’s supposed medical problems. In October, he was convicted to a life term without the possibility of release. In the immediate aftermath of this, Durst was diagnosed with COVID-19 and placed on a ventilator.

“The Jinx”

“The Jinx: The Life and Deaths of Robert Durst” was a six-part HBO documentary about Durst that aired in 2015. It was shown that Durst had a hand in the murder of Berman, and that McCormack and Black were also murdered. Deborah Charatan, Durst’s lawyer, advised him not to participate in the film, but he ignored their advice and agreed to several interviews and full access to his personal archives. When Durst appears to believe he is no longer being filmed at the end of the documentary, his microphone picks up confessions to his murders.

Other Cases

Additionally, Durst has been convicted of indecent exposure, bail jumping, stealing and being a felon with a firearm and a controlled substance in his possession in addition to his murders. In 2016, he was sentenced to 85 months in jail for the second charge.

In 2021, Durst is infected with COVID-19, which made his preexisting medical conditions worse. On January 10, 2022, at the age of 78, he died of cardiac arrest at the San Joaquin General Hospital in Stockton, California. This happened while he was receiving evaluation. He was still in the care of the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation at the time of his death.
