Patriot League Men’s and Women’s Indoor Track & Field Athletes of the Week Announced (1.31.23)

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Boston University claimed four Patriot League Indoor Track and Field Weekly Awards when the League announced honors on Tuesday. Army West Point and Lehigh University each earned one.

Boston University graduate student Aksel Laudon was named Patriot League Indoor Men’s Track Athlete of the Week after posting an IC4A-qualifying time of 4:01.39, the fastest in the League this season. Fellow Terrier sophomore Daisy Liljegren earned an ECAC-qualifying time and a Patriot League-best mark, running a 9:21.95 in the 3000 meters at the John Thomas Terrier Classic.

Army West Point Junior Cam Smith collected Patriot League Men’s Field Athlete of the Week after a nationally-ranked weight throw distance, the best in the Patriot League this season. Lehigh’s Laura Reigle was named women’s field athlete of the week after breaking her own record and setting a Patriot League-best mark of 4.00m in the pole vault.

Boston University freshman Vera Sjöberg was named Patriot League Women’s Rookie of the Week after posting a Patriot League-best time of 4:43.05 in the mile. Terriers’ classmate Michael Onilogbo was named men’s rookie of the week after finishing first at the John Thomas Terrier Classic in the 200 meters with an IC4A-qualifying time of 21.45, ranking best in the League this season.

Army West Point’s Georgia Jones, Bucknell’s Karen Hull, Meghan Quinn, and Sam Whittaker, Lehigh’s Liam Lovering, and Loyola Maryland’s Jamie Adams all received honorable mentions for their performances last week.

Patriot League Men’s Track Athlete of the Week
Aksel Laudon, Boston University, Gr., Middle Distance, Phoenix, Ariz. / Desert Vista

*Laudon placed 19th at the John Thomas Terrier Classic with an IC4A-qualifying time of 4:01.39.
*His time is the fastest recorded in the Patriot League this season and is now the seventh-best mile time in BU program history.

Patriot League Women’s Track Athlete of the Week
Daisy Liljegren, Boston University, Sun., Distance, Ho-Ho-Kus, NJ / Northern Highlands Regional

*Liljegren finished 15th at the John Thomas Terrier Classic with an ECAC-qualifying 3000 meters time of 9:21.95.
*Her time is the fastest 3000 meters time recorded in the Patriot League this season.

Patriot League Men’s Field Athlete of the Week
Cam Smith, Army West Point, Jr., Throws, Blythewood, SC / Blythewood

*Smith placed third at the Penn State National Open with an IC4A qualifying weight throw of 21.21m, setting a new program record.
*His throw is also the best in the League this season and ranks 23rd nationally.

Patriot League Women’s Field Athlete of the Week
Laura Reigle, Lehigh, Fy., Pole Vault, Hilton, NY / Hilton Central
*Reigle finished first in the pole vault at Lehigh’s dual meet against Lafayette where she broke her own school record with an ECAC-qualifying vault of 4.00m.
*Her vault is the best in the Patriot League and is the first female to clear four meters in school history.

Patriot League Men’s Rookie of the Week
Michael Onilogbo, Boston University, Fr., Sprints, Stanford le Hope, England / Gable Hall School

*Onilogbo finished first at the John Thomas Terrier Classic in the 200 meters with an IC4A qualifying time of 21.45.
*His time is second in the Patriot League this season and tied for eighth in BU program history.

Patriot League Women’s Rookie of the Week
Vera Sjöberg, Boston University, Fr., Distance, Stockholm, Sweden / Rudbeck High School
*Sjöberg earned a 14th-place finish in the mile with an ECAC-qualifying time of 4:43.05 in her debut mile at the John Thomas Terrier Classic.
*Her time is the fastest in the Patriot League this season and ranks sixth all-time in the BU program history.

Honorable Mention
Georgia Jones, Army West Point, Jr., Distance, Mont Vernon, NH / Souhegan

*Jones finished 17th at the John Thomas Terrier Classic with an ECAC qualifying mile time of 4:45.99. Her time is second in the League this season and set a program record.

Karen Hull, Bucknell University, Jr., Jumps/Hurdles, Randolph, NJ / Randolph
*Hull Earned first in the high jump at the 2023 Bison Open with an ECAC qualifying jump of 1.70m that is the second best in the League this season and is now second in the Bucknell program’s history.

Meghan Quinn, Bucknell University, Jr., Sprinter, Lititz, Pa. / Warwick

*Quinn clocked an ECAC-qualifying time of 24.36 to earn second-place in the 200 meters at the 2023 Bison Open. She has the second fastest 200m time in the League this season.

Sam Whittaker, Bucknell University, Sr., Distance, Salem, Conn. / East Lyme

*Whittaker placed 18th at the Penn State National Open in the mile with an IC4A-qualifying time of 4:05.35. The time ranks third in the League this season.

Liam Lovering, Lehigh University, So., Throws, Ellicott City, Md. / Centennial
*Lovering placed first in the shot put at Lehigh’s dual with Lafayette with an IC4A-qualifying throw of 16.62m, the second-best distance in the Patriot League this season.

Jamie Adams, Loyola University Maryland, Fr., Sprints, Columbia, Md. / Reservoir

*Adams broke two Loyola program records in the 60 meters and 200 meters with ECAC qualifying times of 7.65 and 24.51, ranking second and fourth best in the Patriot League this season, respectively.
