A traffic stop at a Fort Myers gas station led to the arrest for two men on multiple charges related to theft and fraud Monday morning.

Florida Highway Patrol Troopers initiated a traffic stop on a 2016 Freightliner truck at the Pilot Gas Station at 6054 Plaza Drive, at 9:36 am Monday.

The truck and two occupants were suspected to be involved with diesel fuel theft and credit card fraud, on an earlier date and different location, FHP said in a release issued Tuesday.

“Closer inspection, revealed the truck was stolen out of Miami and illegally equipped with unlawful welded fuel tanks, filled with stolen diesel fuel,” the release states. “Troopers also confiscated a credit card skimmer, numerous stolen credit cards, and a laptop used by the duo to defraud.”

The driver, Juan Alfredo Escalona Hidalgo, 33, of Bradenton, and passenger Raul Torralba, 42, of Lehigh Acres, were arrested and transported to the Lee County Jail.

Torralba remained in the Lee County Jail this morning on multiple counts of larceny as well as a charge of unlawful conveyance of fuel.

Hidalgo, who also was charged with multiple counts of larceny, was released Tuesday, according to Lee County Jail records.
