BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Trailing 3-0 at halftime, the Lehigh field hockey team put together a strong second half, but the Mountain Hawks ultimately fell 3-2 to Lock Haven in the season-opener for both teams Friday at Ulrich Field.

Sophomore Eleni Kountroubis netted her first career goal early in the second half and then senior Sarah Bonthuis pulled the Mountain Hawks within one with just over two minutes remaining, but Lehigh was unable to find the late equalizer.

“We played nervous and scared in the first half and that was a result of first game jitters,” Lehigh head coach Caitlin Dallmeyer said. “We had a lot of first-years starting and subbing through and we struggled to combine in ways that we needed to in order to perform. We made a lot of simple mistakes that resulted in goals in the first half, and then fortunately we woke up in the second half and had a really strong performance overall.A performance that I’m excited to move forward with because I think we showed our potential. If we can work to meet that potential, we have a great season ahead of us. “

Lock Haven needed just 26 seconds to take the lead as the Bald Eagles earned a corner following a Lehigh defensive miscue and Jazmin Palma delivered with a drive to put the visitors in front.

The Bald Eagles scored again off a corner in the second quarter as Amy Stevens scored off a pass from Palma and extended their lead to 3-0 as Martina Spangenberg dribbled into the circle and took a shot that was initially stopped by senior Maddie Kahn before trickling into the cage.

The Mountain Hawks came out stronger in the second half, and got on the board 3:15 into the third as Maddie Kandra’s cross-body shot was tipped in by Kountroubis inside the back post.

Lehigh made a late push as Bonthuis capped a strong run with a cross-body shot into the back of the cage with 2:05 remaining to bring the Mountain Hawks within 3-2, but Lock Haven was able to run out the clock to claim the opening night victory.

“It was leadership and confidence,” Dallmeyer said of the second half turnaround. “At halftime, we talked about what we wanted to be known for. We talked about a relentless work rate and how we had not proven anything in the first half and how we needed to shift and adjust really quickly to prove to ourselves and everyone who is playing close attention to Lehigh field hockey that we are capable of more; and we did that.”

Shots finished even at 9-9 while Lock Haven had a 6-4 edge in penalty corners. Kahn finished with four saves for Lehigh while Kelsey Felix made two stops for Lock Haven.

The Mountain Hawks travel to Temple on Sunday to face the Owls with game time set for noon. The game will be broadcast on ESPN+.
