PHILADELPHIA – The Lehigh rowing team hit the water Saturday and enjoyed success on the Schuylkill River in Philadelphia. Both the women and men raced against La Salle and Fairfield in the morning, while the women faced UMass in the afternoon. The respective Varsity Eights (men and women) led the way for both teams.
The Women’s Varsity Eight came in first in the morning (with a time of 6:36.5) and second in the afternoon (6:47.8), but by less than six seconds against a strong UMass crew. The Men’s Varsity Eight also finished first in the morning (6:03.3), finishing more than 11 seconds ahead of Fairfield.
“Morning racing I think went really well for us,” said Lehigh head coach Brian Conley. “The Women’s Varsity Eight raced to their potential, which was great and they were excited getting off the water.”
Along with the Women’s Varsity Eight, the Second Varsity Eight came in second out of three crews (with a time of 6:57.1), as did the Varsity Four (7:40.3).
“The 2V had a really great race for us,” said Conley. “We were excited to see them put together some things that we saw they can do in practice – to put that together in a race. The Varsity Four had a really solid race in the morning
“In the afternoon [against UMass]we’re really happy with how we performed in the Varsity Eight and Varsity Four,” Conley continued. “The Second Varsity Eight struggled a little bit in the afternoon.”
On the men’s side, along with the men’s varsity eight finishing first, the varsity four came in second (6:35.8)—ahead of Fairfield in third.
“La Salle really got the advantage on us (in the fours), but when we switched to our priority event, we were able to put some things together in the Men’s Eight, which we’ve been trying to do all year,” said Conley.
The men will now prepare for their MARC Championships on Sunday, May 1. The women will return to the water the day prior, on Saturday, Apr. 30, against Bucknell, Duquesne and Delaware.
