BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Senior Casey Rother had himself one day to remember, capping off an impressive week at the plate as the Lehigh baseball team put forth an unforgettable offensive effort in a 17-6 victory over Holy Cross Sunday afternoon at J. David Walker Field in the final regular season home game of the 2022 campaign.

Rother went 4-for-5 with a double, a home run and a career-high eight RBIs, falling just one short of the single-game program record. The senior outfielder has a home run in three consecutive games now, tallying a hit in 13 straight and reaching base in 20 consecutive games.

The Mountain Hawks (23-20, 10-11 PL) scored seven runs in the sixth inning to take a commanding lead, eventually hanging on for the 11-run victory.

Aside from Rother’s four-hit afternoon, a trio of Mountain Hawks also registered three hits with Joe Gorla (3-for-4), Tyler Young (3-for-5) and Chase Carlson (3-for-4).

On the mound, junior righty Carlos Torres (3-1) picked up his third win of the season after allowing three runs on seven hits with three strikeouts in the start. Junior Ben Christian and sophomore Tyler Thompson combined to allow just three runs (one earned) over the last four innings.

Lehigh scored first in the bottom of the first inning following Young’s single through the left side, taking an early 2-0 lead.

After Holy Cross cut into the lead in the second inning on Tyler Mudd’s RBI single, the Mountain Hawks scored four in the second on Rother’s three-run double and Retzbach’s sacrifice-fly to left center as Lehigh pulled ahead further, 6-1.

Andrew Nole made it a 7-1 ballgame in the third inning on an RBI single, followed by Gorla’s double and a two-run single to center off the bat of Rother as Lehigh led, 10-1 after the first three innings.

Holy Cross scored twice in the fifth inning to cut the deficit to 10-3.

In the sixth, the Mountain Hawks batted around and was led off by Rother’s solo home run to left center field. Young reached on an error, which brought in a run and Riley Davis walked to cause a pitching change. Back-to-back walks with the bases loaded brought in a pair more runs as Lehigh took a 14-3 lead. Gorla singled to right field to score Nole and Rother came up again with a two-run double to left center field, giving the Mountain Hawks a 17-3 cushion.

The Crusaders scored two runs in the seventh and one run in the ninth, but the Lehigh lead was insurmountable, resulting in a 17-6 final.

Lehigh will play its final non-league contest of the season on Wednesday, visiting Saint Peter’s at 3 pm, streamed live on the Peacocks Digital Network. That matchup will precede a crucial final weekend of the regular season with two games at Army West Point on Saturday and two games at Holy Cross Sunday.
