PHILADELPHIA – The Lehigh softball team enjoyed an offensive explosion Wednesday on the way to a doubleheader sweep over Penn at Penn Park. The Mountain Hawks took game one 9-6 and then scored 13 runs over the first two innings of game two on the way to a 15-1, five-inning triumph in the nightcap.

Lehigh totaled 24 runs on 30 hits and hit five home runs over the two games. Senior Jaelynn Chesson led the way for the Mountain Hawks, going 5-for-6 over the two games Wednesday with three home runs and nine RBIs. The three home runs give Chesson 28 for her career, tying her with Morgan Decker ’16 for Lehigh’s career record. The Mountain Hawks have won five straight games to improve to 10-11 on the season.

Game one saw Lehigh take a 3-0 lead after two and a half innings as senior Melissa Fedorka brought home sophomore Brooke Cannon with a sacrifice fly and then Chesson hit a two-run home run to straightaway center field.

Penn tied the game with three runs in the third off first-year Maria Urban but Lehigh answered with a four-run fourth inning to go up 7-3. Fedorka delivered the go-ahead RBI single and later scored on a wild pitch, while Chesson and Cannon both drove in runs with singles in the frame.

Sophomore Amanda Greaney doubled and later scored on a three-base error in the fifth, and Chesson hit her second home run of the game in the sixth, a solo shot to right center which put Lehigh up 9-3.

Penn battled back in the bottom of the seventh, pushing three runs across and loading the bases, but with two outs senior Gabriella Nori came out of the bullpen to strike out Corrie Phillips to end the game.

Urban picked up her first career victory, allowing three runs on seven hits in four innings with a walk and two strikeouts. Nori earned the one-out save, while first-year Anna Bjorklund provided solid relief, allowing three runs on three hits in 2.2 innings with three walks and three strikeouts.

Chesson went 3-for-3 in the opener, while Cannon finished 3-for-4. Senior Carley Barjaktarovich was scored 2-for-3 with three stolen bases and two runs.

Lehigh went right back to work offensively early in game two, scoring four runs in the first inning on a Chesson sacrifice fly, a Greaney two-run single and a Kittel RBI single; and then blew the game wide open with a nine-run second inning.

Chesson opened the nine-run outburst with a two-run home run to right center, her eighth of the season and record-tying 28th of her career. After two singles, O’Rourke launched a three-run blast to left for her first career home run. Two batters later, it was Kittel drilling a two-run home run to center. Chesson came up again with a chance to break the home run record, but settled for a two run single to put Lehigh up 13-0.

The Quakers picked up their only run of the nightcap on a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the second. Greaney doubled home two runs in the fifth to cap the Lehigh scoring.

Greaney went 3-for-4 in game two with four RBIs, leading a group of seven Mountain Hawks who recorded multiple hits.

Nori was credited with the victory after allowing a run on two hits over two innings with two strikeouts. Sophomore Katelyn Young followed with three innings of scoreless, two-hit relief with five punchouts.

The Mountain Hawks will open their home schedule and kick off an 11 game home stand when they welcome Lafayette to Leadership Park for three games this weekend in the Rivalry, presented by Lehigh Valley Orthopedic Institute. Lehigh and Lafayette will play a double header Saturday beginning at noon and a single game Sunday beginning at noon. All three games will be broadcast on ESPN+.
