ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Lehigh women’s tennis team opened up the 2022 fall season at the Navy Invitational in Annapolis, Md. this weekend. The Mountain Hawks, who sent six student-athletes to the three-day tournament, finished the weekend with one flight championship and one consolation bracket title.

“We had a great first weekend together as a team,” said head coach Olivia Leavitt. “All of the girls competed hard and smart. We learned a lot and know what we have to work on to continue to keep building. We are excited to continue this competitive energy this weekend at our home invitational.”

Juniors Anushka Dania and Megha Dania claimed Lehigh’s flight championship on Sunday afternoon. The duo started the weekend with a bye and defeated opponents from Mary Washington and Navy as they worked their way into the championship round.

In their final doubles match of the weekend, the Dania’s faced Niamh Harding and Kamila Wong from Johns Hopkins. The Lehigh duo defeated Hopkins 6-3 to claim a flight championship for the Mountain Hawks.

Sophomore Hamsa Javagal fell to St. Bonaventure’s Amelia Haley (6-3, 6-0) in the opening round of singles at Flight A but went on to win three consecutive matches to earn a consolation bracket title for Lehigh. Javagal defeated Mary Washington’s Abigail Moghtader in the quarterfinals (6-4, 6-4) and Johns Hopkins’ Mary Beth Hurley in the semifinals (6-2, 6-3) to work her way up to the consolation championship.

Javagal faced teammate, senior Junmoke James in the championship, where she defeated James 6-4, 6-4. James, who had a bye in the opening round of the consolation, defeated Monmouth’s Zoe Kaplan (6-3, 6-3) to face Javagal in the championship.

First-year Avery Hopkey advanced to two championships in her Lehigh debut. Hopeky, playing alongside Javagal, competed in the doubles championship at Flight A. During singles play, the first-year advanced the championship in the consolation at Flight B.

The Danias had solid performances in singles play at Flight C but both were unable to claim another championship title for Lehigh. Anushka made it to the semifinals while Megha made it to the championship, both falling to Navy’s Parvathi Shanker.

Bella Peters also made her Lehigh debut this weekend. The first-year opened up the three-day event with a win against George Mason’s Avleen Waraich (6-3, 6-7 (4-7), [10-4]) but lost in the quarterfinals to Johns Hopkins’ Zoe Hsieh (6-0, 7-6 (7-1)).
