EASTON, Pa. – Senior left-hander Luke Rettig spun his second complete game shutout of the season in Game 1, while the Lehigh baseball team battled in Game 2, eventually falling as the Mountain Hawks (13-8, 1-1 PL) split Saturday’s doubleheader against Lafayette (5-18, 1-1 PL) at Kamine Stadium.

Rettig was dominant yet again, extending his streak without an earned run allowed to 21.0 straight innings. He tossed seven shutout frames, striking out eight batters, walking three and scattering five hits en route to his Patriot League best fifth victory of the season. Rettig is 5-1 with a 0.26 ERA, allowing just one earned run in 35 innings of work, striking out a total of 41 batters with 15 walks.

Lehigh was led offensively by Riley Davis in Game 1, going 2-for-3, while Adam Retzbach recorded the team’s other hit, an RBI single that scored Tyler Young in the top of the third inning, which proved to be the winning run, as Rettig kept the Leopards out of the run column for the remainder of the ballgame.

Lafayette tallied four of his five hits in the contest against Rettig through the first two innings. Until allowing a two-out knock to Seif Ingram in the bottom of the seventh inning, Rettig had retired 10 in a row.

Game 2 started ahead of schedule after a two-hour Game 1, with first pitch at 2:25 pm

Lafayette struck first in the bottom of the first inning after drawing a bases loaded walk to bring in a run, taking a 1-0 lead.

Whitlinger tied the game up at 1-1 in the top of the second after singling home Justin Butler after Butler and Davis got on via back-to-back hits.

The Leopards scored on a passed ball in the second inning to take the lead and again on a sacrifice-fly in the third to go ahead, 3-1.

Davis singled to kick off the top of the fourth inning for Lehigh, advancing to second on Tyler Young’s one-out walk. Gerard Sweeney brought the Mountain Hawks back within a rum after singling home Davis, cutting the Leopard lead to 3-2 and in the fifth, an Adam Retzbach solo home run tied the game at 3-3.

Lafayette took a three-run lead after scoring three in the fifth inning off Tyler Thompson, adding another on a SAC fly in the sixth.

The Mountain Hawks attempted to come back in the seventh inning after Retzbach reached on an error and Rafe Perich singled to put runners on first and second base. A Butler RBI double scored Retzbach to cut the deficit to 7-4 and Davis made it 7-5 on an RBI knock to score Perich.

Young singled with two outs in the inning to bring Lehigh within one at 7-6, scoring Butler, but the Leopards kept Lehigh out of the run column for the remainder of the contest, holding onto a 7-6 victory.

Thompson (0-1) was charged with the loss, going 2.2 innings and allowing two earned runs on two hits with two strikeouts and a walk. Carlos Torres got the start, going 2.1 innings and allowing three runs on four hits with three strikeouts and four walks. Nick Pave kept the Leopards off the scoreboard for the final two innings, going three strong frames with four strikeouts and just one earned run allowed.

The Mountain Hawks totaled 16 hits as a team with three players (Perich, Butler and Davis) registering a trio of hits.

Lehigh will look to get the series victory on Sunday, taking on the Leopards for two more games beginning at noon, streamed live on ESPN+ (subscription required).
