Mountain Hawks Fall to Navy in PL Quarterfinals

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh women’s tennis team fell to Navy 4-0 in the Patriot League Quarterfinals on Friday afternoon on the Ulrich Varsity Tennis Courts. The Mountain Hawks finished their season with a 5-11 overall record.

“This was an incredibly challenging season and I just told them in the huddle I couldn’t be more proud of the way that they handled everything that was thrown at them,” said head coach Sarah Hendrix. “They used it as fuel for their on-court performance and the way they competed on the court, the way they fought for each other was just, I’m just so floored by the way that they competed today and they way that they fought for each other.”

Lehigh got off to a slow start against the Midshipmen, falling in both doubles matches and trailing 1-0 going into singles play. Junior Junmoke James and first-year Hamsa Javagal battled at the No. 1 spot before falling 5-2 to Navy’s Jillian Taggart and Kacey Moore. At the No. 2 spot, sophomore Megha Dania and junior Anna Harvey fought hard against Navy’s Katreina Corpuz and Meghana Komarraju before falling 6-1.

The Mountain Hawks battled during singles play but were ultimately unable to hold off Navy. The Midshipmen clinched the quarterfinal win at the No. 4 and 5 spots. Junior Heidi Shen fell to Stella Ribaudo 6-0 in two sets in the fourth flight and Havey fell to Casey Accola 6-0 in two sets in the fifth flight.

Before Navy clinched the win, Lehigh was battling during singles play. Javagal fell 6-1 in the first set, but was up 2-0 in her second set at the No. 1 spot against Navy’s Emily Tannenbaum. Dania was tied with Navy’s Katreina Corpuz 4-4 at the No. 3 spot before the match was stopped.
