Mountain Hawks Fall Short in Heartbreaking Five-Set Match to Navy

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh volleyball program came up just short against Navy in Patriot League action (25-18, 17-25, 25-22, 23-25 ​​and 14-16) on Friday evening in Leeman-Turner Arena at Grace Hall. The Mountain Hawks fall to 13-13 on the year and 4-10 in league play while the Midshipmen improve to 13-10 overall and 10-4 in Patriot League competition.

Navy held an 6-4 edge in the first set before Lehigh strung together seven points in a row to take an 11-6 lead. The Mountain Hawks extended their advantage to 23-15 and continued to close out the first set with a 25-18 victory and a 1-0 lead in the match.

Lehigh and the Midshipmen were within a couple of points of each other as the Mountain Hawks led 13-11. Navy scored the next seven points to go ahead for good in the second set and tie the match at 1-1.

The Mountain Hawks possessed a 6-5 edge when Navy rallied for six-straight points to take an 11-6 lead. Lehigh countered with five consecutive points to tie the match at 11-11 and regained the advantage for a 18-13 lead. Navy pulled within a point, 23-22, but the Mountain Hawks scored the final two points of the set to take a 2-1 lead in the match.

The Midshipmen never surrendered the lead in set four, leading by as many as eight points on a couple of occasions. Lehigh fought back and tied the set three times throughout the set, the last time being at 21-21, before Navy tied the match once again and put the set score at 2-2.

After Lehigh recorded the first point of the fifth set, Navy extended the score to 6-3 but the Mountain Hawks countered with three straight points to tie the set at 6-6. Lehigh possessed a 13-9 advantage and even got to set and match point at 14-11, but the Midshipmen rallied to score the next five points to win the set and match.

The Mountain Hawks had a higher hitting percentage than Navy, with Lehigh hitting .222 overall and was hitting a clip of .458 in the first set. Sophomore Megan Schulte was one of three Mountain Hawks to register double-digits in kills. Schulte recorded a team-high 18 kills to go with ten digs, three blocks, an assist and a service ace. Sophomore Emily Stewart and first-year Natalie Luscomb both finished the match with 12 kills each. Stewart added five blocks, with one solo block, and two digs while Luscomb contributed three blocks, one being a solo block, and two assists.

Sophomore Makena Smith paced the Mountain Hawks’ offense with 47 assists to go with her five kills, six digs, and three service aces. First year Dakota Hartman finished the match with eight kills and registered four blocks, a trio of service aces and two digs. Sophomore Kyleigh Brown led the squad with 26 digs while adding two assists and one service ace.

Lehigh is back in action tomorrow to take on American in the Mountain Hawks final home match of the season. The contest is scheduled for 4 pm and will be broadcast on ESPN+.
