RALEIGH, NC – On its opening day of the 2022 season, Lehigh was done in by its inability to get the final outs of innings, Friday at the Wolfpack Classic. The Mountain Hawks opened the day with a 5-1 setback to Mount St. Mary’s and then fell 3-0 to host NC State with seven of the eight runs allowed coming with two outs.

Senior Carley Barjaktarovich paced the offense, going 3-for-6 on the day and Lehigh had scoring opportunities in both games but was only able to muster one run on the day.

In Friday’s first game against Mount St. Mary’s, the Mountaineers took the early lead with a pair of two out runs in the top of the first inning. Lehigh put his first two on in the bottom of the first but could not bring the runners around.

Another two out rally in the third allowed the Mount to extend its lead. Kaia Bonshock homered leading off the fifth to close out the scoring for Mount St Mary’s (1-0).

Lehigh scored his lone run in the seventh inning as first year Hanna Aldrich laced a one-out double to right center and then scored on a single by senior Addie Kittel.

Sophomore Katelyn Young started in the circle and allowed four runs (three earned) on seven hits in four innings with two walks and three strikeouts.

Game two began as a pitcher’s duel between senior Gabriella Nori and NC State’s Sam Gress. Nori allowed just one single and one walk through the first four innings while striking out six.

Lehigh had two on in scoring position with two outs in the fifth. Aldrich came on as a pinch hitter and hit a rocket down the first base line that was snagged by Wolfpack first baseman Taylor Johnson to end the threat.

Nori opened the bottom of the fifth with two quick outs before loading the bases on three consecutive singles. Kaylee Lambrecht cleared the bases with a three-run double to provide the only offense of the game for NC State (5-1).

Lehigh got the tying run to the plate with two outs in the seventh, but Maddie McPherson came out of the bullpen to get Aldrich to fly out to end the game.

Nori allowed three runs on five hits in 4.2 innings with a walk and six strikeouts. First year Maria Urban pitched in relief in both games Friday, allowing a run on three hits over 4.1 innings.

Gress allowed five hits over 6.2 innings with three strikeouts for NC State.

The Mountain Hawks will continue action at the Wolfpack Classic on Saturday when they face Fairfield at 10 am before taking on Mount St. Mary’s again at 12:30 pm
