BOSTON — First-year Rory Dudley drilled a second-inning three-run home run and senior Gabriella Nori went the distance on a six-hitter as the Lehigh softball team halted several streaks from red-hot Boston University with a 3-0 win in the second game of a doubleheader Saturday at BU Softball Field. The Mountain Hawks’ victory stopped the nation’s longest active winning streak at 27 consecutive games. Lehigh also halted BU’s 33-game Patriot League winning streak and its 25-game home winning streak.

The Terriers (38-14, 16-1 PL) won Saturday’s first game 4-0 to clinch the Patriot League regular season title. Boston University will host the Patriot League Tournament May 12-14. Lehigh is now locked into the No. 2 seed at 25-17-1 overall and 14-3 in the league. The Mountain Hawks will open the Patriot League Tournament Thursday against No. 3 Army West Point at a time to be determined.
“Boston is a very good team and coach Waters has done an outstanding job with them,” Lehigh head coach Fran Troyan. “They had won 27 in a row, but I feel like we’re the best team they have played since they went north. Our goal at this point in time is to just win the series. We’ve won every series we’ve played in the league so far, and that’s still in our grasp We don’t want to make too big a deal of it, but it should give us confidence to show that not only can we play with them, but we can beat them .”

Lehigh registered five hits against Lizzy Avery, with O’Rourke leading the way, going 2-for-3.

Nori allowed base runners in six of the seven innings she pitched but kept the Terriers off the board to pick up her first shutout of the season. She allowed six hits, walked one and struck out three to improve to 10-9 on the season. Nori benefitted from a terrific sliding catch by senior Jaelynn Chesson in right field to end the first and also successfully navigated a two-on, no-out situation in the fifth and a bases-loaded, one-out jam in the sixth to keep Boston University off the scoreboard.

“We moved Karsen over to third base, where she hasn’t played since before the pandemic,” Troyan said. “We felt like it was an important change to make and we moved Josie (Charles) over to second. The defense in that second game was really solid and Gabi pitched a whale of a game today.”

In game one, BU went in front with three two-out runs in the third inning. Marina Sylvestri doubled home Lauren Keleher and then Nicole Amodio hit a two-run home run to put the Terriers up 3-0 after three. Boston University added another run in the sixth on a Caitlin Coker sacrifice fly.

Allison Boaz limited Lehigh to five hits in the opener, with sophomore Brooke Cannon going 3-for-3 to lead the way. The Mountain Hawks’ biggest threat was in the top of the third when they put two on with one out but back-to-back strikeouts got Boaz out of trouble.

Sophomore Katelyn Young started for Lehigh and allowed four runs on nine hits over six innings with two walks and five strikeouts.

Lehigh and Boston University will wrap up their series and the regular season with a single game Sunday at noon. The game will be broadcast on ESPN+. The Mountain Hawks will then return to campus before heading back to Boston for the Patriot League Tournament, beginning Thursday.
