Lehigh Looks to Defend Team Title at Lafayette’s ABARTA Collegiate Invitational

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh men’s golf team will make the short trip to the Steel Club in Hellertown for the two-day ABARTA Coca-Cola Invitational, hosted by Lafayette Sunday and Monday. The Mountain Hawks will look to defend their team title in the event while also getting an opportunity to play the course that will host the Patriot League Championship at the end of the month.

The Steel Club course plays to a par 72 at 6,875 yards. The tournament will feature 18 holes of play both Sunday and Monday. An 18-team field includes Bucknell, Canisius, Colgate, Fordham, Fairfield, Holy Cross, Iona, Lehigh, Monmouth, Mount St Mary’s, Navy, Niagara, Robert Morris, St Bonaventure, Siena, Towson, Rhode Island and Villanova.

Lehigh is coming off a seventh place finish out of 12 teams at the Columbia Spring Invitational Monday at Rolling Green Golf Club in Springfield, Pa. Sophomore Edmund Broderick led the way, tying for fifth place at 142 (76-66). Broderick was named Patriot League Golfer of the Week earlier this week. First-year players Aidan Oehrle and Jahan Bains turned in strong opening rounds and were Lehigh’s No. 2 and no. 3 finishers.

The Mountain Hawks also have a strong core of juniors, with Daniel Song, Joey Dotta and Alex Aurora competing at the Columbia Invitational and Sam Barton and David Hurly expected to return to the lineup this weekend.

Last year, Lehigh posted an eight stroke win over Rider to claim the team title at 574 (278-296). Barton led the way, tying for fourth place at 142 (70-72). Hurly, Dotta, Broderick and AJ Gilpin also played in last year’s event.

Following the ABARTA Coca-Cola Invitational, Lehigh will play in Villanova’s Wildcat Invitational in Malvern, Pa., April 18-19. The Steel Club will be the site of the Patriot League Championship April 29-May 1.
