BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Lehigh held his Brown and White Intrasquad Friday night inside Leeman-Turner Arena at Grace Hall. Nine bouts were contested in the unofficial kickoff to the 2022-23 season, which begins in earnest next weekend.

“It was pretty good,” Lehigh head coach Pat Santoro said. “First time getting down to weight, the guys looked like they were in shape. There were a lot of tight matches, which you’d expect. You’d like to see the guys be a little more aggressive and that’s something we’ll work on going into next week. We don’t want to wait around. Be more aggressive and try to press your opponent more often. Once per minute isn’t enough.”

The intrasquad began at 125 with deferred first-year Carter Bailey picking up a 2-0 decision over first-year Killian Delaney. Bailey escaped to open the second period and rode out Delaney in the third.

Sophomore Malyke Hines followed with a 5-0 decision over first-year Owen Reinsel at 141. Hines scored the only takedown of the bout in the first period and added a stalling point, an escape and riding time.

At 149, sophomore Max Brignola posted a 7-3 decision over sophomore Drew Munch. Brignola scored a takedown in each period and added a third period escape.

Senior Josh Humphreys delivered the lone fall of the night, as he secured a pin in 1:53 against sophomore Tyler Sung at 157. Humphreys was leading 2-0 when he turned Sung with a half nelson.

The bouts at 165 and 174 were both 3-1, sudden victory decisions. Junior Brian Meyer broke a 1-1 tie with a takedown 23 seconds into sudden victory to defeat first-year Connor Herceg 3-1 at 165. In the next bout it was Sean Kilrain scoring 34 seconds into the sudden victory period to defeat Thayne Lawrence in a battle of third-year wrestlers at 174.

There were two bouts at 184. In the first one graduate student Tate Samuelson defeated junior AJ Burkhart 4-1 behind a second period takedown. Sophomore JT Davis then posted the second bonus point win of the night, racking up six takedowns in a 13-5 major decision over sophomore Caden Wright.

In the final bout of the evening, junior heavyweight Elijah Jones won a 3-2 decision over deferred first-year Nathan Taylor. Jones ended up on top from an upper body position for the only takedown of the bout in the third period.

“Any competition is good,” Santoro said. “Learning how to compete in front of a crowd with a referee and a singlet should help our guys get ready. We were down to weight tonight which is really good. We have two good teams coming in next week. We have to be ready and we have to be more aggressive because those teams are going to come in and wrestle really hard.”

The Mountain Hawks, who open the season ranked 17th in the NWCA dual meet poll, will open up the regular season with two home duals next weekend. Lehigh will host No. 19 Oregon State at Stabler Arena on Saturday, Nov. 5 at 12 pm and will then welcome Sacred Heart to Leeman-Turner Arena at Grace Hall on Sunday, Nov. 6 for a 2 pm match. Tickets for both duals can be purchased at LehighTickets.com or by calling 610-7LU-GAME during business hours.
