Lehigh Acres Middle School day extended 30 minutes for upcoming school year | News, Sports, Jobs
This coming August, Lehigh Acres Middle School students will attend school from 9:45 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., an additional 30 minutes.
The approval to extend the school day was passed unanimously at the school committee meeting on June 22nd.
Linda Maere, executive director of school development, said schools were given the option to extend the school day based on the percentage of the district’s lowest 25 percent in reading and math. In addition, 80 percent of the workforce must vote for an extension of the day.
“The aim is to strategically address learning gaps during the extension at the end of the day.” She said. “Schools will use the extra time for intervention and enrichment to improve student performance and address the unique learning gaps for each student.”
The cost of the additional 30 minutes is $ 377,845, which will be used to staff those additional 30 minutes. The funds are taken from ESSER in order to pay the employees their hourly rate.
