As always, the top five stories from this week are below.

1. Through a visitor’s eyes: What you say when you fly confederate colors in Pa. | Charles D. Allen

This year marks my twentieth as a member of the U.S. Army War College faculty and resident of the greater Carlisle community.

Each year we receive a new cohort of War College officer-students attending the resident education program. They come from diverse backgrounds and locations from across the nation.

In addition, we have about 80 International Fellows from more than 70 countries.

2. Fetterman: ‘Same *s**t, different day,’ with latest Norfolk-Southern derailment | Monday Coffee

After yet another train derailment, Norfolk Southern has hit an apparent tipping point with Pennsylvania lawmakers, prompting fresh calls for accountability for the freight hauling giant.

Nine railcars from a Norfolk Southern train jumped the tracks outside of New Castle, Pa., about 50 miles northwest of Pittsburgh, on May 10, the Associated Press reported.

Unlike a fiery derailment earlier this year in East Palestine, Ohio, there were no hazardous chemicals on board. Officials said there were no reported injuries, according to the Associated Press.

3. Meet the 7 Democrats running for Lehigh County commissioner

In Lehigh County, four at-large seats are open on the nine-member Board of Commissioners – a number that on its face doesn’t represent a majority but is enough to swing control of the board back to Republicans.

That’s because three of the five Democrats who make up the board majority aren’t seeking reelection – Bob Elbich, Dave Harrington and Zakiya Smalls.

Only incumbent Democrat Dan Hartzell is running again in the May 16 primary.

4. With the Pa. House and more at stake, the race to replace a disgraced DelCo lawmaker is heated

A special election for a legislative seat in the Philadelphia suburbs would normally be a quiet affair, but with control of the Pennsylvania House at stake, the campaign to replace former state Rep. Mike Zabel, D-Delaware, is unusually intense.

Zabel resigned in March after several women accused him of sexual harassment. The House Democrats’ narrow 102-101 majority survived the scandal only because Republicans were also down a vote after a member of their caucus was elected to the state Senate in January.

Now, Democratic nominee Heather Boyd and Republican nominee Katie Ford are running what one volunteer called a “knock-and-drag” campaign to turn out voters en masse in a typically low-participation municipal primary.

5. Biden endorses Democratic nominee in DelCo special election for control of the Pa. House

President Joe Biden has endorsed Heather Boyd, the Democratic nominee in a consequential special election for a suburban Philadelphia seat in the Pennsylvania House of Representatives.

The race between Democrat Heather Boyd and Republican Katie Ford in the 163rd Legislative
District in Delaware County will determine which party controls the General Assembly and holds the power to advance its legislative agenda.

Biden’s endorsement, unusual in a state legislative race, highlights the high stakes of the election Tuesday to replace former Rep. Mike Zabel, D-Delaware, who resigned earlier this year amid multiple sexual harassment accusations.

And that’s the week. We’ll see you back here next week.
